The King George V Playing Fields Trust and the Sports & Community Centre

About the Centre

The Centre has a fully equipped gym with a variety of exercise machines and a separate weights area.

A large multi-purpose hall accommodates such activities as five-a-side football, indoor cricket, short mat bowls, badminton, basket ball, netball, keep fit and aerobics classes, dance classes and major social events. Adjacent to the hall is a health suite.

Modern changing rooms with lockers and showers have been provided for football, rugby and cricket team members and officials, as well as for others using the exercise and sporting facilities within the Centre.

About the Project

The project was conceived to meet the needs of a widespread rural community of all ages around a ten to fifteen mile radius of the small Devon town of Moretonhampstead.

The King George Playing Field Trust registered charity, established nearly 50 years ago with a number of constituent sports clubs (football, rugby, tennis, etc), had an old and dilapidated building with very limited and totally inadequate facilities.

Rather than attempt to fix it, the community decided to go for something dramatically new and much larger.

The goal was to create a sports and community centre offering the widest possible range of facilities for the widespread rural community around the town.

This galvanised residents and friends in the community into action and many pulled together to create the design, develop a bid and business plan.

The project has been a model example of a community working together in an innovative way to bring new opportunities to people through a wide range of community, social, sporting and leisure facilities.

In delivering the project, the main contractor and builder, site manager and project manager were all local people and each gave some or all of their time and expertise free.
